Top Mistakes with epoxy floors

Some of the best looking floors can be done using the many various epoxy coatings whether it is a garage floor for a homeowner or a large warehouse facility requiring a heavy demand of it’s floors. Whenever we look at floors we are in search of a few key things that will let us know what products and preparation will be needed.

  • Will there be chemicals in direct contact with the floor?
  • Will there be heavy machine traffic from forklifts or frequent spills such as gas, oil?
  • What does the customer expect the floor to look like when done? Is it a showpiece?
  • What does the customer expect the final product to achieve

Once that is established we can determine what level of prep is going to be needed on the floor. Where some jobs go wrong is usually at this moment. Most do not want to spend the cost to fully prepare a floor to accept and bond to the new coating.

Has a moisture test been done on the floor to determine the proper level of moisture beneath or in the surface? This can cause a failure with any coating and moisture is generally the number one cause of peeling paint.

Is there a sealer on the floor or other coating? Have you dropped some water in various locations to see if it absorbs into the floor?

If you spill a bit of water on a floor and it puddles you need to remove some of that coating generally

Have you investigated the correct product for your needs? There are a ton of different products out there and all have specific needs. I would strongly suggest speaking with a knowledgeable person who has done floors before applying any coatings as once it is down and if you have any issues you will need to then remove that coating.

Use a good quality epoxy coating your comfortable using if your going to do it yourself, many have very specific mixing needs and only last in the bucket a short time. Some require two people working together at a very fast pace

At Ryan Amato Painting we try to train our workers as much as possible while learning about all the new products, applications and correct prep work needed
